Relay is a venture-backed startup building a one-tap Experience platform that streamlines business-customer communication. Businesses using Relay are outgrowing their competitors by 1.5x and growing customer lifetime value.

The Relay team is looking for a skilled of Director of Engineering to lead a growing and highly capable development team. This is a critical strategic hire for the executive team – you will be creating and molding the technology and product roadmap as the company continues to scale. Though not required, ideally this position would develop into a CTO role with the company.

Role Description

Relay is creating an easy, yet elegant solution for a fast-paced world. The company deeply understands the challenges of growing a business which is why they are on a mission to create a one-tap customer experience platform to simplify communication between service professionals and homeowners. The founder is an experienced serial entrepreneur and investor with a track record of previous exits.

As the Director of Engineering, you’ll be a key player in strategic problem-solving for the company specifically around technology selection, evaluation, and implementation. This role early on will be heavily hands-on with respect to building and writing quality code and creating new features. The founding and executive team will look to you for insights on the scalability of their current tech stack (GCP, BigQuery, Node, MongoDB, React, React Native), as well as making tech stack recommendations moving forward according to best practices, cost tradeoffs, etc. Experience in Twilio is critical – you'll need to manage 10's of millions of concurrent messages at scale. You will be managing a highly capable, distributed team (US-based in Salt Lake City and eastern Europe).

Other priorities of the role could include the following:

  • Leading the team through management and mentorship
  • Contributing to recruitment activities e.g. hiring and selecting core engineering team members
  • Developing standards and procedures to ensure quality standards are met and consistent
  • Contributing to the product roadmap and vision
  • Preparing and optimizing budgets


  • Deep experience with Twilio (building services/integrations with the platform)
  • Deep hands-on engineering experience (stack is heavy javascript/js frameworks)
  • Previous experience building/scaling new products and services from the ground up
  • Experience vetting, hiring, and leading teams

Bonus Points

  • Experience building highly scalable/fault tolerant systems
  • Experience with Elixir
  • Experience with AI automation

  • Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000 + .5% - 3% equity
